In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
